Whitney Thompson Makes History – First Plus Size Model to Win America’s Next Top Model
Whitney Thompson, a 20 year old model from Florida, has made history as the first plus size winner of America’s Next Top Model! This is also the first time in history that a plus size model has even made it into the top 3 of the reality show. I have to admit I’m not a regular viewer of the show although I have friends who refuse to miss an episode, no matter what might be going on in the world. After winning Thompson was shocked and said, “I want other women in America to feel good about themselves.” I love that she has that attitude and I agree that everyone should feel good about themselves and their bodies.
What do you all think? Were you pulling for another contestant? Are you happy that a plus size (or “real size”) model won?

I have mixed feelings about this. Congratulations to Whitney for winning. But a size 10 plus size? A size 10 is not a plus size except in the distorted world of fashion/modeling. Plus size stores don’t even sell size 10s.
I think this message is damaging to young girls and teenagers who are given yet another reason to try and diet down to a small size because once you get to a 10 you’re now considered a plus size which to many means “fat.”
I wish the message from ANTM was more empowering.

I agree; she’s not really a “plus” size model.
But she at least approaches a normal sized woman rather than the “Heroin Chic” Etheopian waif look that has pervaded the fashion world for a long time now.
I couldn’t agree more, Hurricane! I keep thinking the fashion world is going to “plump” up a bit more or at least display a somewhat healthier look but it just doesn’t happen.
She kind of reminds me of a modern-day Marilyn Monroe. Simply beautiful.
10 is not plus.
Americas Next Top Model is not relevant enough to count as “History”.
Wow!!! In context of the industry she is in she is plus size. Face it. Then look at yourself and see why you can’t be genuinely happy about this huge stride for size acceptance.
of course americas next top model counts as history! (well kind of lol)
i think its great that she won even though i must agree that she shouldnt be classed as a plus sized model. the “normal” models should really be called, in my opinion “minus sized models” as most of them look like lolly pops with tiny frames and big heads and people with curves such as whitney should be the normal models.
I think she’s beautiful. I’m so happy that a normal sized girl won ANTM. It’s about time.
I think she’s way too heavy to be a model. clothes just look better on thin women
I think she is a beautiful woman and deserves to win. Too many young girls are starving themselves to look like a ‘pretty model’. I think this is fantastic. Thumbs up to America’s Next Top Model!
Grayson,
Thanks for the wonderful comment! As a former model, I know all too well what it’s like for girls to starve themselves to look good! It’s great that there’s people like you encouraging girls to be beautiful at any size. Thanks again!
