Ellen DeGeneres’ Advice: “Find Out Who You Are and Live That Truth”

Ellen DeGeneres reveals her advice to every woman along with why she became a vegan and whether or not she will be able to be brutally honest on American Idol in an interview with Katie Couric! She has such amazing advice for all of us and I’m thrilled to feature her here! Here’s an excerpt of the interview that was conducted for Glamour Magazine.
KC: I was lucky enough to be in the show today. You thanked the audience—you really said it from your heart. Why do you do that?
ED: Because most people don’t live this way. They don’t get to laugh, be free, dance, be surrounded by this energy. It’s important to remind people to take that home. I want the world to start shifting [to] a more positive energy.
KC: Do you find it disconcerting that there seems to be so much vitriol in society today?
ED: I try not to take it in. Let’s take an example: someone who’s antigay, who despises who I am. If I hate that person, I’m the same as them. Some people are closed and angry. If I can help shift that by just being who I am, great—and if not, that’s not my job.

KC: You’re a great role model, because you’ve stayed true to yourself. What advice would you give young women?
ED: Find out who you are and be that person. That’s what your soul was put on this earth to be. Find that truth, live that truth, and everything else will come.

KC: Let’s talk about American Idol. Will you have a hard time being brutally honest?
ED: I won’t have a hard time being brutally honest. But I won’t be mean. You don’t have to be mean to be honest.
KC: You’re a vegan—you eat no meat, no eggs, no dairy. What changed in you?
ED: I watched a documentary, Earthlings. It’s inside footage of factory farms; 50 billion animals a year are killed. They’re in pain, treated badly, diseased, pumped full of antibiotics. I saw the reality and just couldn’t ignore it. And I’m healthier and happier.
KC: You’ve made body image a topic on your show. Does it bother you that women are so obsessed with their bodies?
ED: Yeah. We put the wrong emphasis on what beauty is and what health is. Health is being vibrant and having energy and being happy.
