Critics Up In Arms Over “Fat” Victorias Secret Model “With Cellulite”

Victoria’s Secret Supermodel, Karolina Kurkova, is being criticized by the Brazilian media for appearing “too fat” on the runway.  These photos were taken during the Cia Maritima show during Sao Paulo Fashion Week where the media reported that the 5′11 Czech model had “back fat, love handles and cellulite“.  They also said the audience was “shocked” to see the model heavier than usual with “cellulite on her butt.”

According to Forbes magazine, Kurkova is one of the world’s highest paid models.  She is best known for being a Victoria’s Secret Angel but has appeared in campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel and Balenciaga.

It’s “shocking” to me that after all the recent controversy over models being too skinny and some like Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston and Uruguayan fashion models and sisters Luisel and Eliana Ramos dying from lack of nutrition that anyone could criticize a woman who looks like this!  I understand it’s her job to be tone and fit and to look a certain way but is it really necessary to have this kind of reaction over a few extra pounds?

Maybe I’m super sensitive to this subject because I was also a model and was criticized this very same way when I gained weight near the end of my career.  I know what it feels like and it’s such a frustrating place to be.  It’s funny how the very same people who are your biggest fans can also be your worst critics.  At the risk of rambling on forever here, I’ll leave this to you ladies and gentlemen to discuss.  :)   I would love to hear your thoughts.

You have got to be kidding me…yes, I swear people are never happy. Too fat, too skinny, the debate rages on. Girlfriend looks healthy. Bravo to her.

Hopefully she doesn’t read too many of the tabloids.

  2. MizFit says:

no shocker that I agree with Jenn.

    *rolls eyes* at the industry.

  3. SpinDiva says:

WOW…crazy world we live in. Of course, the people criticizing are usually the industry people not the “real” people. Once in a while I would like to see real women modeling something the rest of us seemingly overweight people might want to wear. I have seen some cute items on a VS model and thought, well that looks good on the size ‘0′ manequin, I’m not sure it would look so great on my huge size 8 behind…LOL.

**Note: understand that I am being facetious about the “overweight” and “huge size 8″ thing. :)

  4. Cynthia says:

    Jenn – let’s hope!

MizFit – I knew you would weigh in on this one! :)

SpinDiva – Size 8? *gasp* We should really talk about a training program for you!! ;) lol KIDDING, of course! You know, it has been nice seeing more of the “real” size women (that phrase is still a little odd to me) modeling these days. I think maybe it was Dove that started the trend. It’s very refreshing.

  5. Alison says:

She is a little chubby for a VS model but the way people freak out over it in a negative way, instead of remaining psychologically flexible about it, is very telling in regard to a kind of cultural mental illness and even a misogyny in regard to a healthy woman’s body. I just opened a magazine and saw a picture of Colin Farrell accusing him of looking “gaunt.” It’s true he was skinny. The problem I had was that the “gaunt” look Farrell has is considered “healthy” and “beautiful” and “sexy” and… well, non-fat in women. I don’t get what is so perfect about the half-starved female body. It’s bizarre. I love how someone like Kim Kardashian and Queen Latifah strut their stuff in the face of all of that.

  6. Ayesha says:

I think she looks beautiful and way better then the other VS models. This is a lot closer to what a healthy woman looks like…I bet most men would find her body way more attractive then the other stick skinny models!

I think that she could use some muscle tone. She is not fat, but she is flabby. Considering that she makes millions of dollars just to look good, she’s not doing her job very well. That whole “real women” model is a joke in my opinion, my wife is a real woman and she looks way better than this VS model. And I don’t even pay her millions of dollars… Sorry if it sounds harsh, but this trend only exists to make the chubbier women a little happier and conformed with their body size, instead of eating healthy and hitting the gym.
VS models should be e example of how beautifull a woman can be, and not another example of what we see on the streets everyday. Shape up people!

  8. Keely says:

She looks sexier than ever. Who decided it was sexy to look like a young boy? No she looks like a woman. And she’s a hero for having the nerve to Stand up”

  9. Jana says:

No matter what people say, I think that she looks the best out of all the rest. She’s beautiful and looks healthy. I don’t understand how people can be so uptight about stuff like this. It plays a small role in life. Plus, aren’t they there to advertise the clothing, not the sex appeal? I know sex sells, but they shouldn’t advertise too much because how will people know what they’re selling without the “titles” and/or “name brands” ? Hell, I wouldn’t.

  10. RB says:

She’s being paid millions to look skinny with no fatty rolls and be smooth and toned… she is none of those things anymore. She has put on weight and it can be shocking when people see a model do that.
also.. John, I agree with everything you wrote.

  11. Carolina says:

I think that she looks great but as a model, it is her job to maintain a certain weight, thats probably why she is being so criticized…I mean, its in her contract to stay at a certain weight…Even Tyra Banks stated that if she were to have a baby, models would usually have to loose that weight within a 40-90 day period.

  13. Metqa says:

Isn’t the purpose of the model to model the clothing. If her weight and shape kept her from modeling the clothing I could see that as a problem, but there is no way you can expect everyone in the world to look like models, and as a model she looks very normal, not skinny, and with skin in all the places that normal, non-bulemic people have it.

But the thing is , they knew what she looked like before they put her on the walkway, so if they didn’t want people to see that then they should have chosen clothing that would be accentuated by her figure. Maybe a swimsuit with one of those sheer top thingies. Needless to say, if she’s broken her contract, then it doesn’t seem like anyones too eager to fire her for it.

  14. Mishelle says:

I worked on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Miami in November, and I was shocked, and I mean shocked, to see how skinny these chicks were. Even all of the guys on the production team, who had been so excited to see these ’sexy’ models were repulsed when they saw them in person. I realized after seeing so many women who were starving themselves (and I don’t care what they say, nobody is that skinny) I no longer envied them. I was happy with my healthy body. I think that what may be perceived as being fat on Karolina should, and probably will, start to become the new standard for the women that we want to see modeling our clothes. We as consumers are the only ones who can raise our voices for what we find acceptable, and what we choose to emulate. Despite all of the complaints about skinny models, the lines still go out the door at Victoria’s Secret every day. Why? Because women still want to look like them. That is what has to change.

  15. sky says:

She looks fine. Chubby? Come on…she is fine. That’s what real sexy women look like. Personally, I always thought she was the best looking out of all of them! Still is!! Get over it.

  16. dia says:

OMG…….shes georgous how can anyone say shes fat-she looks like a woman should look like not like one of those curveless sticks that have no muscle or meat on their bones.she represents a healthy woman who eats normally instead of starving herself.I think she looks great and people should not be hard on her because shes heavier than a twig.shes healthy.not to fat and not to skinny.

  17. alessandra says:

i think shes beautiful, but it is her job to stay fit so of course people tell her to lose weigh.that happen to all models because designers do not want their models to be fat.its ok for a normal women to look like that, but as a model you cant gain weigh.sorry for my bad english,i am from brazil
