3 Tips for A Healthier Flight
I’ve been traveling the past several days and I’m so happy to be headed home this afternoon! In preparation for my flight, I realized that sharing my tried and true tips for a healthy flight could benefit some of you as well.
Like many people, I don’t want to abandon my health for the sake of travel but airlines don’t exactly make it easy. From the fast food options at the airport to the sodas and processed foods on the plane, eating healthy while flying can be difficult. But, it doesn’t have to be! Here are three tips to help make your next flight a healthier one!
1. Eat Breakfast – Before you head out in the morning, make sure you eat a breakfast that’s high in protein and fiber. Good examples include a bowl of oatmeal with fruit; 2 eggs with whole wheat toast and berries; yogurt topped with wheat germ, berries, and nuts; and a bowl of high-fiber breakfast cereal and fruit.
2. Pack Snacks for the Flight – I never eat any of the foods provided on a plane. Most of them, from snack packs to first class meals, are loaded with sodium, fat, and calories. Instead, I pack lots of healthy snacks including nuts, trail mix, fresh cut veggies and fruits, and depending on the length of the flight, I will even pack a natural peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread.
3. Stay Hydrated - Flights are very dehydrating so it’s important to drink water before, during, and after. Make sure you always drink water from a bottle you’ve brought on board or bottled water from the plane. Never drink the tap water! You should also try to avoid caffeine and alcohol. For a drink other than water, pack some herbal teas and have the flight attendant prepare some hot water for you.
With these tips you can finally sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight! Do you have any other healthy travel tips you would like to add?

With the no liquids restriction, they make it harder (and more expensive) to stay hydrated on the plane, but I always make sure to bite the bullet and buy a bottle of water once I’m through security. It may be a bit expensive, but it’s totally worth it!
I couldn’t agree more, Jenn. I normally fly Delta and one of the nice things they do is hand out bottled water for free on the flights. It’s the smaller bottles but I’ve never had a problem asking for more. I just hope it continues with all the airline cutbacks we’ve seen lately!
