How Vanessa Carlton Stays Centered
Singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton has quite the busy schedule but she always manages to find time to lead a balanced life. She loves working out and on an average week, she goes jogging 5 – 6 times! But life is not all about work and working out for Vanessa. The songbird realizes the importance of balance in her life and makes sure to add relaxation, volunteering, and mentoring to her schedule. In an interview with Shape Magazine, she said,
“In 2005, a friend of mine who volunteers with Musicians on Call, a nonprofit organization that brings music to hospitalized patients’ bedsides, asked me to run the New York Marathon for the charity. The race itself was as much of a mental test as a physical one. It helped me see what I’m made of; I’d definitely do it again.”
As for sharing her experiences through mentoring, Vanessa says,
“It’s hard to find mentors, but when you do, it can pay off big time. Mine is Stevie Nicks, whom I met a few years ago. She taught me to reach out to younger female artists and help them find their way. I’m a big advocate now of women helping each other and exchanging ideas. It makes everyone better in the end.”
Amen, sister! I too am such a girls girl and am all about women supporting each other. It’s also really refreshing to find celebrities – or anyone for that matter – who make it a point to take time out for themselves and others. It’s very Healthy Hollywood!

Wow, she’s impressive! Running, doing volunteer work, mentoring–all on top of being a celebrated singer-songwriter.
And being new here, I have to say this is a great idea for a blog. So many stories about celebrities reinforce the WORST ideas about how to stay fit and balanced (starvation, diet pills, cigarettes, plastic surgery, crack, whatever). It’s nice to read the positive, inspiring stuff.
Check out Crabby McSlackers last blog post – Whither Random Friday?
That’s awesome. I’ve never really heard he in many interviews talk about working out or volunteering. Sounds like she has a good head on those shoulders!
Crabby – Thanks so much for stopping by and all the nice words! I’m so happy that so many people find the blog inspiring and refreshing!!
Jenn – I agree. She’s a smart girl who is very comfortable in her body and life.
