Coming Soon: Organic Garden at the White House

It’s the first day of spring and the Obamas have fresh vegetables on their minds: veggies that they plan to grow themselves in the first White House organic garden! This is no small undertaking- the garden will contain 55 varieties of vegetables, grown from organic seeds, according to The New York Times. What’s on the list?

Plenty of greens, including several varieties of lettuce, kale, spinach, chard and collards, peas, carrots, broccoli, berries and lots of herbs. And don’t forget fresh honey, which will be harvested from two hives on the property. Check out the garden’s future site in the picture above.

An assistant White House chef plans to oversee the project and local elementary students will help with the planting, but the Obama family will take part in everyday garden maintenance. And, of course, they’ll enjoy the fruits of their labor.

“A real delicious heirloom tomato is one of the sweetest things that you’ll ever eat. And my children know the difference, and that’s how I’ve been able to get them to try different things,” Michelle Obama said.

While the Obamas are setting a healthy example, Michelle stresses that we don’t all need an organic garden to make healthy choices.

“You can begin in your own cupboard by eliminating processed food, trying to cook a meal a little more often, trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables.”

What better time than the beginning of spring to clean the junk from our diets?
