Southern California girl Rachel Bilson is reminding us about the all-too-common incidence of skin cancer, even as the warmer weather brings us all outdoors for the spring and summer seasons. The actress partnered with Jergens to raise awareness for skin cancer research, part of the company’s Glow in the Dark Initiative.

Rachel admits that, as a California native, she thought tanning was the norm.

“Growing up in Southern California, getting tan was a big part of the culture. Now being aware of how bad [tanning] is for your skin, you can still get that look and that glow without harming your body,” the actress told People magazine.

She’s talking about Jergens Natural Glow Healthy Complexion moisturizer- a self-tan formula that also provides SPF 20 protection. But even if self-tanner’s not for you, sun protection definitely is. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is the seventh-most-common cancer for females, according to Johns Hopkins University. As Rachel reminds us, it’s time to be proactive about prevention!
