Have you ever noticed that every time we see Matthew McConaughey working out, it’s always outdoors! He’s definitely proof that you can get an amazing workout AND an amazing body without hitting the gym. Here are five workouts that will help you slim and tone up while you enjoy the great outdoors.

1. Hiking - This is one of my favorites because it hardly feels like I’m working out at all. I’m too busy taking in the beautiful sights and sounds of nature and then before I realize it, I’m finished! Hiking is a great workout for your legs, abs, and butt plus it has tremendous cardiovascular benefits. A 150 pound woman can burn 250 calories while hiking for 30 minutes!

The only equipment you need is some good hiking shoes and a map of the area you will be hiking in. Also, make sure you take some time out to learn about any possible dangers where you’ll be hiking. You’ll thank me for this when you don’t have to make mad dashes through bees like my husband and I did on one of our hikes!

2. In-line Skating - This is such a fun workout and it can be done almost anywhere. You will need a pair of skates as well as the proper safety gear but these things are fairly inexpensive. Once you have your gear, all you need is a smooth area to skate on. Look for areas with great scenery to keep you motivated. A 150-pound woman can burn 550 calories in only 30 minutes!

3. Swimming - You’ll stay cool with this exercise but you’ll definitely heat up your body! A 150-pound woman can burn up to 400 calories in 30 minutes while getting a wonderful workout for her muscles without any hard impact on her joints. Even if you can’t swim, working out with water weights or performing other exercises in a pool is a great substitute.

4. Cycling - You’ll need a bike and the appropriate safety gear for this one but with gas prices on the rise, it may not be a bad investment. Bike to the store or to run quick errands instead of starting up the car and you’ll save money and get in a great workout! Cycling can burn up to 400 calories in 30 minutes.

5. Surfing - You didn’t think I would forget the obvious one, did you? Matthew McConaughey is no stranger to this sport and for good reason! It’s a wonderful exercise to tone your entire body and burns up to 200 calories in 30 minutes. Of course you’re going to need a surf board and an ocean for this one which may prove to be a little tricky for those of you living in Nebraska.
